The medical bill coding industry will be undergoing regulatory change in the immediate future. On October 1st, 2015, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will move forward with the revisions to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). As a result of this change, providers and payers will be required to use the new ICD-10 codes in transactions for services delivered on or after October 1, 2015.
Many states have specified the manner in which ICD-10 should be implemented. Liberty Mutual plans to comply and uphold jurisdictional regulations. For states that remain silent in their position, Liberty Mutual will expect ICD-10 coding be used on any medical bills submitted for services rendered after October 1, 2015. For services provided prior to October 1, existing ICD-9 coding methodology is expected. For information regarding state level implementations of the ICD-10 mandate, please visit the applicable Worker’s Compensation department website.
